About VAir
VAir is a French medtech start-up developing the next generation of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) medical devices that can rapidly detect respiratory infections from exhaled air. Our technology is based on proprietary biosensors and aims to transform the way respiratory infections are diagnosed. It is faster than RT-PCR and culture, more accurate than antigen tests and completely non-invasive.
Join our team incubated at the Drahi-X Novation Center at École Polytechnique and take part in our mission to make respiratory infection diagnostics faster, smarter, and more accessible to everyone. Supported by Bpifrance, EPFL Innovation Park, WILCO, and Medicen, we are now accelerating our R&D efforts to develop our first functional prototype and prepare for industrialization.
The role
Join us at the forefront of medical innovation! We are looking for a Senior Mechatronics R&D Engineer to drive the development of our cutting-edge respiratory diagnostic device. You will design and build a fully functional prototype, integrating mechanical, electronic, fluidic, and industrial design elements.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a major medical innovation in a dynamic startup environment, with prospects for growth into managerial responsibilities as the team expands. You will play a key role in transitioning the technology from proof of concept to an integrated prototype, working closely with our CTO and guiding technical decisions through your senior-level expertise.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop the mechatronic architecture of the diagnostic device (mechanical, electronic, and fluidic aspects)
- Perform computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D modelling
- Develop and integrate embedded systems (firmware, data acquisition and signal processing)
- Design analogue and digital electronic circuits
- Manage fluidic aspects (condensation, sample concentration and flow management)
- Rapid prototyping (3D printing, machining, assembly)
- Define and execute test and validation plans
- Collaborate with R&D teams (biosensors, microbiology) and industrial partners
- Contribute to industrial design and product ergonomics
- Document developments and contribute to technical documentation (ISO 13485)
Required qualifications
- Engineering degree or Master’s in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, electronics, or related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience in designing and developing complex mechatronic systems
- Strong expertise in mechanical design and CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, or equivalent)
- Proficiency in electronic design (schematic, PCB routing, Altium/KiCad)
- Experience with embedded systems and programming (C/C++, Python, microcontrollers)
- Self-starter with proactive attitude and ability to manage multiple projects
- Strong attention to detail and rigor in technical documentation
- Creativity and ability to propose innovative solutions
- Fluent English (written and spoken)
Nice to have
- Experience in medical devices or in vitro diagnostics
- Knowledge of regulatory standards (ISO 13485, IEC 62304, CE marking)
- Experience in microfluidics or fluid management
- Skills in industrial design and product ergonomics
- Experience in a startup or scale-up environment
- Technical team management experience
- Fluent French
What we offer
- A project with a significant impact on global health
- A dynamic and collaborative environment at the heart of the French innovation ecosystem
- Access to state-of-the-art facilities at École Polytechnique’s Drahi-X Novation Center
- Significant responsibilities and real autonomy
- Opportunities for advancement to management positions
